For years, Samsung had the big-screen foldable market almost to itself. Now Apple has arrived with the **iPhone Duo**, going head-to-head with Samsung's **Galaxy Z Fold8**. Both open from a phone into a 7.6-inch mini tablet — but they're built on very different ideas.

📱

****Quick verdict:** The **Galaxy Z Fold8** is $100 cheaper, available now, and light at 201g. The **iPhone Duo** is the choice if you're in Apple's ecosystem — but it's a first-generation product, so waiting for reviews makes sense.

## Design and screens

Both phones use a 7.6-inch inner display, with near-identical outer screens (5.4 inches on the iPhone, 5.5 on the Samsung). Samsung says the Fold8 is its lightest Fold yet at **201g**, and just 4.5mm thin when open. Apple says the iPhone Duo is the thinnest iPhone it has ever made when opened.

## Performance

Both use top-tier chips: Apple's new A20 Pro and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. Either will handle anything you throw at it. The bigger differences are in software and ecosystem.

## Cameras

The iPhone Duo uses a 48MP Fusion main camera and hides a FaceTime camera under the inner display, with a clever Duo FaceTime feature for calls through the outer screen. The Fold8 has a 50MP main and 50MP ultrawide camera, but **no telephoto lens** — for zoom, Samsung's pricier Fold8 Ultra adds a 200MP main camera and a 3x telephoto.

## Battery and charging

Apple uses a dual-battery design spread across both halves, while Samsung uses a 4,800mAh battery with 45W wired charging plus wireless and reverse wireless charging. Real-world battery tests will tell us more once the iPhone Duo is in reviewers' hands.

## Software and support

iOS 27 has been redesigned for the iPhone Duo's wide screen, and it's the obvious choice if you use a Mac, iPad or Apple Watch. The Fold8 runs Android 17 with One UI 9, and Samsung has years of experience making apps and multitasking work well on foldables.

One practical note: the iPhone Duo is **eSIM-only**, so check that your carrier supports eSIM.

## Which should you buy?

- **Buy the Galaxy Z Fold8 if** you want a proven foldable you can buy today, for $100 less, with Samsung's mature multitasking.
- **Buy the iPhone Duo if** you're committed to Apple's ecosystem and want Apple's first take on the folding phone — ideally after the first reviews arrive around October 23.
- **Want the best cameras?** Look at the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra ($2,099) with its 200MP main and 3x telephoto.
