OnePlus has now launched its most performance-focused phone yet. The OnePlus 16 went official in China on October 12, one of the first phones built around Qualcomm's new top-tier chip. Here is what the company announced, what changed from the OnePlus 15, and what still needs independent testing.

⚡
Quick take: The OnePlus 16 launched in China on October 12 with the 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, a 9,000mAh battery, a 200MP main camera and a display that reaches 185Hz in games. It starts at CNY 5,999 (about $895). It is a China-only launch, with no U.S. or Europe release.

Launch and availability

OnePlus confirmed the date on its official Weibo account and presented the phone at the OnePlus Gaming Conference 2026. Pre-orders opened on launch night, and sales started on October 13. The launch is China-only: OnePlus has pulled back from the U.S. and Europe, and it has not confirmed a global or India release. China-market phones also normally ship without Google's apps and services.

Each version is reportedly about 300 yuan cheaper until November 13 as a launch offer, which puts the base model at CNY 5,699. China's national phone subsidy can lower the price further.

The chip: Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6

OnePlus uses the Extreme version of Qualcomm's new flagship chip, not the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. It is built on a 2nm process, and Qualcomm calls it the most powerful mobile chip it has made. OnePlus highlighted the GPU's Matrix Cores, a feature reserved for the Extreme version, which points to a focus on gaming and on-device AI. A new generation of the Fengchi Gaming Kernel coordinates hardware resources to keep games smooth.

The reality check

  • The claims are OnePlus's own. Battery life, display and endurance figures, including the claim that the battery keeps at least 80% capacity after five years, have not been independently tested yet.
  • Charging got slower. The bigger battery comes with 100W wired charging, down from 120W on the OnePlus 15. OnePlus quotes 1% to 100% in 52 minutes.
  • It costs more. The starting price is reported to be about 2,000 yuan higher than the OnePlus 15.
  • You probably can't buy it. With no U.S., Europe or confirmed India release, most readers would need to import it, and that means no official warranty and no Google services out of the box.

Final thoughts

On paper the OnePlus 16 is a serious gaming flagship, and the 9,000mAh battery is the headline feature. Whether the real-world battery life and heat control match the claims will only be clear when reviewers publish their tests. A global version could still follow, possibly under a different name, but nothing is confirmed.

Would a gaming-focused flagship like the OnePlus 16 tempt you, even if you had to import it?
